Sample Devo: Slander No More
Meet my daughter Sara. Here’s a peek into her heart as a four year old.
Hi! I’m Sara. For me, life is all about my mommy and daddy, Barney and Ernie, and, of course, vanilla and strawberry ice cream. My mommy and daddy don’t live in the same house. I’m not sure why daddy moved out, but I know it hurts my mommy. I can hear her crying in the living room after she puts me to bed, but each morning she wakes me with a smile, “Get up, darling! God’s given us another day to live for Him.”
I do ok with Daddy not living at home. That is, until I spend the night with Chelsea. Her daddy moved out, too, and sometimes Chelsea and I get to spend the night with him. We jump on the trampoline! He’s fun. But when I return to Chelsea’s house, her mother questions me about her daddy’s girlfriend and tells me bad things about him. I don’t want to go over to her mother’s house anymore. It makes me feel sad to hear mean things about Chelsea’s daddy. I hope my mommy doesn’t think my daddy’s mean.
Friends, in how many homes is that drama lived out in cinema color? That was my home seventeen years ago. My daughter, Sara, is twenty-one years old now. One of her worst memories over the divorce was her stomach ache that developed when Chelsea’s mother walked in the room. It’s true; words spew the most bountiful blessings or the most vicious venom. For many of us, it is hard not to speak evil of those who have hurt us.
There were times that I was surprised that I still had a tongue from biting it so vehemently. But it’s a fact; children don’t want to hear negative comments about their dad. Your mouth has a fire in it: the tongue. Psalms 39:1 suggests buying a muzzle to keep the fire contained. Words! Words! Words!
Words dictate the temperature of the home.
Proverbs 15:1 - A gentle response defuses anger, but a sharp tongue kindles a temper-fire. Consider your words before launching them. They’re combustible.
Words can be used to harm or heal.
Proverbs 12:18 – Rash words cut and main, but there is healing in the words of the wise. “Words that do not give the light of Christ increase darkness.” Mother Teresa
Words either bring blessing or disaster.
Proverbs 12:3 – He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin. You can swallow your words now, but they will come back for review in the future when you see Christ. Your words are being recorded at this moment.
Words under the control bring spiritual maturity.
James 3:2 – For we stumble, but one who is able to bridle his tongue is wise. Place your tongue on the altar. If you can control your tongue, you can control anything.
